Our 2012 General Auditions are coming in mid-February. That’s Sat, Feb 18 in the evening, Sun, Feb 19 during the day, Wed, Feb 22 in the evening (tentative). To sum up, our general auditions are where you get to come in and see us and we give you two minutes to perform just about anything you want. This audition applies to everything we get up to in 2012 until next year’s generals.

This year, we’ll be primarily looking at casting the following:

  • Supporting characters in Legend of the Looking Glass.
  • Team members and guests for our regular sketch comedy show: Windcast.
  • On camera talent for Production Ottawa, including (but not only) movie and theatre reviewers.
  • Anything else that may come up in 2012, for us, or for 3rd parties who ask for casting help.

Find out how to audition.

Been a bit remiss in keeping these Windcasts posted to the website but if you missed any (or if this is your first and you want to check out more from this wacky crew) the full playlist is linked below the video.

In this Windcast, the Windcasters offer up a sequel to last years popular “6 Ways You’re Blowing Your Audition“. This time they’ve got 10 new tips but personally, I think they might be a bit obvious.

We’re a week out from our 2011 General Auditions and I want to thank the fifty-eight actors who made the time to come in and see us. It was wonderful having the opportunity to meet you all. (And yes, the number on Facebook is 64, I forgot to discount Monday night’s no-shows.)

Some directors who are also their own casting directors tend not to like these auditions but I do.  I enjoy meeting new actors knowing that the possibility is there that they’re going to blow me away. The possibility of discovering our next star. And even if I’m not completely blown away, I’m happy to be meeting every person who comes in to see us. It takes a lot of courage to put yourself out there like that. Passion and courage are to be respected.

So our 2011 Auditions kick off on Saturday. Given that, I thought it would be worthwhile to think back to the auditions of years past and put together a list — both of pitfalls actors should avoid and tips to help them get even further ahead. As always, this is just from my  experience so your mileage may vary.

Now, since we are in the business of making videos we put together a special edition of Windcast to kick things off.

In the last three years, I’ve auditioned over two hundred actors and seen my share of headshots. I was talking to a photographer recently about headshots and came up with a list of reasons headshots might be failing their actors. How many apply to you?

If Crow had a headshot, this might be it.

They’re called HEADshots.

I have no idea when or where the concept of headshots came into being but I do suspect that they called them headshots on purpose. Including much more than your head and shoulders is a bodyshot and a different thing.

The point is for casting directors to get a good -and quick- reference of what you look like going into the audition. It’s a first impression. [Read more...]
