We believe that every set, big or small, needs a sense of community and we believe that that community relies on everybody being a productive part of it. Consider the gold-pocket watch. The director is the wind-up spring that powers it. The actors are the face and the pretty gold-casing. But it's all the little gears inside that make the thing work. If every piece of the watch isn't happily working together, the whole thing fails.
That sense of community is strongest when people are working together in harmony towards a singular goal and we encourage that from the earliest stages by surrounding ourselves with others who, like us, have that huge passion for what they do and dedication to the success of the production they're a part of.
Recognizing that we work in a rapidly changing industry, we strive to stay on top of emerging web technologies and the continuing trend to internet-based viewing. We seek to embrace social media and are happy to have an ever-increasing number of ways to reach and interact with the audience we hope to entertain.
Through commitment to consistent quality in every production or service we undertake, we resolve to cultivate Ottawa's growing community of crewpersons and creative professionals and position ourselves as synonymous with production in Ottawa and the National Capital Region.
• Our vision includes encouraging creativity across the board in projects we undertake. We want to produce quality entertainment and we'll do so by telling the kind of stories we would want to hear and having them told by people passionate about telling them.
• Our vision includes seeing our business clients succeed through the dedication to excellence we put in to helping them achieve their goals. We want to use our collected skills and talent to deliver positive results and see local businesses thrive.
• Our vision includes seeing local talent enhance their skills, increase their exposure, and advance their careers. We want to see them continuing to do what they love and will build an array of services to help them do so.
• Our vision includes getting Ottawa recognized as a serious player in the Canadian motion picture industry. We want to showcase Ottawa and its talent to a national - and international - stage and we want to draw productions into Ottawa that may not have considered it before.
Allan Mackey is the founder and President of Valley Wind Productions. A writer in one form or another almost since birth, Allan has been passionately studying the craft and specifics of writing for the screen since 2003. Separate from his love of creating new worlds and stories, he is also a skilled technical writer, doing frequent work on business documents and instruction manuals. With Valley Wind Productions, his great passion for writing and bringing stories to life is complemented with a background in business, having worked with several start-ups and having graduated from Algonquin College's Small/Medium Enterprise program in 2003 with a 4.0 GPA.
Allan's recognition of the talent present in Ottawa and an unfortunate lack of opportunities available to them in the city led to the creation of Valley Wind Productions and its dedication to creating a strong local industry.
Valley Wind Productions was founded in 2008 with the goals of producing quality dramatic-form content, providing production support to local talent and businesses, and encouraging the strengthening and growth of the production industry in Ottawa, Gatineau and surrounding areas (collectively, the National Capital Region).
Principal photography on its first production, the high fantasy five-hour mini-series Untamed Lands, began in May of that year. Shot on location in and around Ottawa/Gatineau, the semi-Guerilla shoot continued, primarily on weekends, until mid-September. The series was written and directed by Allan Mackey who also served as executive producer along with Untamed Lands director of photography and post-production supervisor, Ben Hoskyn. All told, over one hundred people were involved in the production of Untamed Lands, including a cast of seven leads, twenty-five supporting characters, and a score of extras. The completion and quality of the production is a testament to their unwavering dedication, talent, and passion.
Untamed Lands is currently about half-way through post-production with first broadcast licensing opportunities currently available before it moves towards its eventual world-wide launch as a web serial.
Valley Wind Productions plans to leverage the lessons and momentum of an enormously successful 2008 as it moves into its sophomore year of operation. After quietly beginning to offer services to business clients earlier in the year, it will start to roll out various services targeted at local talent over the rest of 2009. Valley Wind Productions will also take the next step in its goal of solidifying the local industry with the launch of web service Production Ottawa in June.
They have also greenlit a number of projects to produce this year including their latest full-length feature, Legend of Oz. Set to start principal photography on a fourteen-day shoot in mid-July, Legend of Oz is a modern evolution of L. Frank Baum's "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz".
Other projects set for 2009 include multiple web 2.0 ventures and numerous shorts.
